Quick jaunt up the M56 and M60 to @metbury for an artist showcase featuring @redlantern artist and label cohort @the_farnorthband deliver an amazing set of songs.

We've not been to The Met before, but the venue is a lovely dual format space, tonight a standing only are for the gig, but also looks like it can be configured for seating for theatre.

Lee is currently mid way through recording his third CD "Songs for Weathering Storms", the follow up to previous releases "Songs for Gentle Souls" and "Songs for Healing Hearts" both of which are available direct from us on the site.

Tonight Lee played tracks from his first two releases, including Grace and This House Is Ours, as well as showcasing two tracks from his forthcoming release including Mountain Song (title subject to change 😂) .

Within half a song of starting the space had filled up nicely and Lee had a fantastic reception from the enthusiastic Bury crowd.

Fantastic set, brilliantly delivered, peppered with Lee's self effacing humour, which had the crowd laughing.

I know he's our artist, but if you get chance go see @the_farnorthband as on the current trajectory, seeing him in these smaller intimate venues will get rarer as he plays larger shows.

So @ticketmasteruk enabled surge pricing on the Oasis tickets yesterday.

One of our label artists got to chrckout to find the already rip-off price of £148.50 had surged to £358!! He didn't buy them. Why would you?

Someone else in the label family got to 650 in the queue, only to be kicked out.

We said on an earlier post, this is not about the fans, well other than ripping them off as much as possible. This is a plain and simple cash grab. From a band who used to claim they were working class!

Also noticed that the multi million pound stadium that is @murrayfield_stadium was saying how great it was that a £2.50 charge on each ticket was going to preserve this highly successful stadium. Not local @musicvenuetrust Edinburgh grass roots venues, nope to the stadium.

These bands forget that without the grass roots venues, they wouldn't be where they are today. @oasis have clearly forgotten this.

Small venues are the lifeblood of live music. £150 buys a lot of tickets, to see great live music at small venues.

Take a chance, go see some real music at a real venue, you may just discover music that changes your life.

An average of £150 for a standing ticket for next year's Oasis's Divorce Bill tour!!!

Now I get they were an iconic band, and I get that they will probably sell the whole tour out in about 20 mins. But is £150 really justified for maybe a 2 hour set, more likely 90 mins, and a brawl if you're lucky?

This feels like a gigantic rip off. And it really isn't about reforming for the fans.

It's been on the cards for over 12 months I reckon, as the reigniting of the feud over the last year smacks of, as Shakespeare would say, 'methinks the lady doth protest too much'.

Also no new material either, I would guess. So it's the Gallagher brothers, maybe with Bonehead, and some session guys filling in.

Nah, I'd rather go see something exciting, at a grass roots venue, that costs £20.

Near legendary Welsh punkers Stuntface joint the Lantern family and sign to Black Lantern Records. Formed in the heyday of the Wrexham thrash and punk scene, they played their first show in November 1999.

This led onto a hard, constant year round touring schedule, sometimes putting 1000 miles a week on the van. This included Ireland, Europe, countless appearances on the Holidays In The Sun / Wasted festivals and tentative plans were made to attack the U.S.A.

They have played shows with such luminaries as Suicidal Tendencies, Poison Idea, D.R.I., Stiff Little Fingers, Conflict, G.B.H. U.K. Subs, Leftover Crack, Capdown, the Subhumans, Funeral for a Friend, the Wildhearts, the Vibrators, Vice Squad and the Damned to name a few.

In Wayne Fireflys own words:

"We were inspired by the likes of the Misfits, SNFU, Bad Religion, Minor Threat, NoFX, Motorhead, Propagandhi, Bad Brains and the Cro-Mags mixing up styles and sounds of the U.S. and U.K. hardcore punk scenes, playing fast and blasting but abrasively melodic punk rock anthems for everyone to commit mass murder to."

Fast forward to 2023 and Stuntface are back with the original line-up, and after a handful of triumphant return shows including support slots for GBH and Undertones, a chance meeting between a Firely and a Lantern in a market means that their classic albums will finally see the light of day on VINYL!

Popped along yesterday to @jacarandaliverpool to not only see the new plaque dedicated to the place the Beatles first performed, but also to meet @markdavyd, CEO of @musicvenuetrust and discuss the plans we have for live music in Chester.

In order that we could spend some clear time from what was a hectic day for him, we went on a walk around the area near The Jac, so there was a decent space to talk in. We ended up doing two laps!

I spoke about Red Lantern, what we have done, how we operate, our vision and what we were already doing with the council and local MP. Mark explained the invaluable resources the MVT have and how they can help with our plans in order to maximise the chance of success. His own venue, The Forum, is a great example of what a grass roots venue can be. I came away more determined than ever, and will start going over the resources available this weekend.

However, I know, there is a lot of planning and another steep learning curve ahead, it's going to be a fantastic adventure.

Grass roots music is so important. Without venues like The Jacaranda and their latest venu @jacarandabaltic and others like @nightanddaycafe, @the_trades_club, @twforum, @the_adelphi_club and thousands of similar venues across the UK, bands like The Beatles would never have had their first gigs and honed their art.

If you've ever been to any of these and looked at the walls, the great and the good of music have all played these clubs, and some of the biggest names still go back and play them.

@frankturner recently played 15 of these venues in 24 hours to both break the MVT record, and help raise awareness of these venues.

More recently @frankcarter23 and @sexpistols played a series of gigs to save @bushhallmusic. Big name acts know how important these venues are.

The MVT do amazing work helping to ensure the future of grass roots music, and Red Lantern will be part of that scene really soon.

Rap legend @methodmanofficial has revealed that he’s yet to earn any streaming income from his music, despite his success as a solo artist and with @wutangClan.

He's not alone.

@snoopdogg has made, in the grand scheme of things, almost nothing compared to the streams he has had.

“In the streaming world, I could show you right now, they sent me some shit from Spotify where I got a billion streams,” he said.

“My publisher hit me. I said, ‘Break that down. How much money is that?’ That shit wasn’t even $45,000.”

Daniel Eck, the CEO of Spotify, paid himself €135 million last year.

Let that sink in.

That's more than ANY artist has earned in the whole time they have been on the platform.

Over 65% of tracks on Spotify will receive zero income.

Spotify also ha e a legion of producers using AI to generate tracks that fit into the zeitveist, these are 'curated' into playlists and shuffles, such that Spotify keep the royalties that should by rights have gone to a real artist.

Streaming is screwed.

Three Hundred and Fifteen Million Euros. That's

Three Hundred and Fifteen Million Euros.

That's what the killer of music royalties earned last year. That's more than any single artist has ever earned from Spotify.

@eldsjal has created an environment where small independent artists just don't get paid.

This is the man who said that music costs nothing to make.

He puts no value on any of the process.

In 2023 Spotify made €13.2 Billion. It claims it paid out € 8.2 Billion in royalties. Also according to filings they lost €530 Million

So that's a staff, infrastructure and advertising cost of € 5.5 Billion, and yet he still thought it was OK to pay himself € 315 Million.

Under the new less than 1000 streams rule, 67% of all tracks listed on Spotify will receive ZERO revenue in 2024, which will mean that they pay less out.

Also if you didn't realise Spotify also employs a lot of producers who write music for Spotify. These tracks are basically AI generated and then reworked so as to not blatantly infringe. These are then out out under fake artist names, and pushed by Spotify's own playlisting algorithm to people that like the music that was ripped off. And there are thousands of these tracks.

All earning royalties for Spotify, or more accurately taking royalties from artists.

The drive for reducing payouts is down to their investors, who want dividend payments, increased revenue and a better stock price. Spotify have taken in some € 2 Billion in investment from some very big name investment houses, and these guys are sharks.

The imbalance is staggering.

Spotify is an insideous money machine, generating cash for its CEO while at the same time killing the music business. Unless you are already a star, the chance of you earning anything for your craft is effectively zero.

There has to be a change, where independent artists have the chance to be paid for their craft.

What a fantastic night of live music.. Last night

What a fantastic night of live music..

Last night me and gig buddy / A&R @clares_world70 went to watch @theheavynorthofficial at the second of two nights of live music to launch their amazing double live album 'Fire in the Furnace'.

Our first trip to @jacarandabaltic, a relatively new venue inside the Cairns Brewery in the Baltic Triangle in Liverpool.

The Heavy North are one of the torch bearers of British Blues Rock and deliver a truly spectacular live experience. They have an amazingly nuanced set, full of their take on this classic genre.

If you're a fan of the originators of the genre like Cream, Free, Zeppelin, Stones and very early mid 70s @whitesnake, or of bands like @rivalsons, @gretavanfleet or @dirtyhoneyband then you have to check these guys out, if you haven't already.

Kenny has such an amazing voice, from a searing growl to soulful tones, these guys really know how to deliver. The set was peppered with tracks from their back catalog, including my faves 'Darkness in your eyes', 'Do you see me' and 'The Genie'. Mind you it's hard to pick favourites when every song is amazing. They also did a cover of Gimme Shelter which really let their backing vocalists shine.

Support was from @mexicandogsofficial, first time we'd seen them, but won't be the last, really loved their set. T-Rex meets Royal Blood is the best way I could describe them. Definitely one to watch, and how we've never seen them before is a mystery!

We caught the most of the openers @gondolas_band and again a great set of energetic indie rock / punk.

Where normally the jaunt into Liverpool is a quick 35 mins, we decided to take the long route via Runcorn and Speke, to avoid the chaos cause by the Farage and Robinson incited hatred that got delivered into Liverpool today. The insidious rise of far right neo nazis masked up as patriotism, is truly sickening.

Love wins. We are all citizens of Earth.

Recorded at their show at @campandfurnace in Liverpool, featuring an extended cast of backing singer's and orchestra.

If you don't know @theheavynorthofficial I can highly recommend them. Seen them a couple of times this year including supporting Dirty Honey where they frankly stole the show. 🤣

We're off to see them perform live tomorrow as well, which is going to be just so good.

Spotify doesn't exist to help musicians and pay them appropriate for thair art. Spotify exists for the benefit of @spotify, it's CEO Daniel Ek @eldsjal, and the investor shareholders that get dividends each year.

For all but the very few artists, and it is less than 0.0015% of artists, will earn $50,000 or more a year. This figure increases by around 15% a year. Spotify claims it wants to have 1 million artists a year earning over that magic number. Which sounds great doesn't it?

At the curent rate of growth (if it is maintained) they will hit that number in 2056.

However given that Spotify itself generates massive amounts of AI music which means no royalties get paid, and that they push this 'music' onto their own playlists, then I can't see that magic number ever happening.

80% of artists on Spotify won't ever receive a penny.

The system is screwed.

Music has become a commodity.

Daniel Ek's comment about music being basically free, tells you everything you need to know.

AI music, and computer generated 'white noise' type tracks should be demonetised, as pressing a button on a computer is NOT the same as crafting a song over weeks, months or years.

Change needs to come sooner rather than later.
